On today’s episode, Liz is joined by a colleague and friend, Whitney Wing Drake - the creator of The Essential Wedding Co, The Essential Wedding and Engagement Planner, and The Essential Wedding Podcast. The ladies dive into Whitney’s planner, how her business came to be, and what the premarital process does, can, and should look like. Whether you’re engaged, married, or single/dating, this podcast is for you!

EPISODE NOTES:

  • The premarital phase is one of the most important times in a couple’s relationship to focus on their relationship.

  • It’s important, as a couple, to set yourself up well and be mindful and intentional while you’re engaged and planning your wedding. After all, after the wedding, every step forward is about your relationship.

  • The engagement season is often the biggest time in a couple’s life where they have so many outside opinions and influences playing into their thoughts and decisions.

  • It’s vital to start your planning process by deciding and discussing what is essential  and what isn’t - this will make the budget and spending processes easier to navigate.

  • One big reason marriages don’t work out is because there are expectations and assumptions that are made but aren’t actually communicated to one another.

  • Differences will unfold in any long-term, serious relationship. Some people feel or think that differences may mean you’re not with the right person, but this is not true. This is just an opportunity to dive in deeper to who your partner is and create a healthy space to talk about those differences and grow from them.

  • Taking the steps to determine who you and your partner are, who you want to be, the wedding you want to have and why you want to have it can all set you up to not be so vulnerable to outside opinions when it comes to your wedding or marriage planning process.

  • With the changes in our world this year, couples have an amazing opportunity to not only think about what is essential in their wedding planning, but also in general as a couple in their relationship and their world.

  • It’s so important to have a solid sense of who you are as an individual and keep pushing forward towards your own individual goals and desires while walking alongside someone else in a relationship.

  • The effects of two people becoming husband and wife, and who they are as people - what they believe, how they treat others, how they impact the world - trickles down through their children, and their children, and so many family generations that ultimately effect our entire world. This is at the forefront of what couples should be focusing on in their relationship both as individuals and a team.
